CHAPTER EIGHT

Now

“Don’t,” Silver warned in a cold tone.

It startled Adam into stepping two feet away from her. “What? What did I do now?”

“Wipe that look off your face. I don’t want your pity.”

He blinked, then frowned. “There’s a difference between pity and sympathy.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t want that either.” She hoped he would respect the finality in her voice, but he didn’t seem to be done.

“I’m just trying to say I understand. My sister, she… the way she died—”

His voice shook as he spoke, and he cut himself off, his eyes suddenly clouding with grief and unshed tears.

For the second time, a piece of Adam’s past clicked into place, and Silver’s steely resolve melted away. She immediately grasped the horror he couldn’t put into words—and yes, of course he would be sympathetic. But even without knowing any details about what happened to his sister, Silver was sure it was entirely different from her situation.

Everyone was shaped by their history, but she refused to let this one aspect of her past define her. She had suffered through a shit ton of violence, but she hated being seen as a victim of anything, much less of sexual abuse. She was a lot of things, but that wasn’t one of them.

After the one, isolated incident when he coerced and intimidated her into spending the night with him, Silver hadn’t been naïve enough to justify Master Drake’s actions and hope he would change. On the contrary, that was the night she had finally recognized that the boy she once loved was gone, and a monster had taken his place. From then on, she had protected herself as best she could in her circumstances and made sure it never happened again.

By the time she left the estate, she had become cautious of relationships altogether, and she hadn’t entered into that type of commitment ever since. The fact that the few encounters she’d had over the years didn’t involve men wasn’t out of fear of the gender. Rather, it was a direct result of her self-isolation, and it was a coincidence that the handful of individuals that she sought temporary physical or emotional comfort with weren’t men.

“Everything I’ve done since I left has been by choice,” she told Adam, her voice soft but firm. “The past was shit, but it’s behind me. I don’t need to be fixed. Not from that.”

He stared at her for a long moment, taking in her every word with solemn gravity. Then he nodded, and his gaze softened.

“For what it’s worth, I’m really sorry.”

Her eyes flashed. “I just said I don’t want pity.”

“I meant about kissing you.”

Taken aback, Silver’s mouth hung open for a moment before she closed it again.

“I shouldn’t have done that without making sure you were okay with it,” he went on.

A shiver ran up her spine, but she refused to let it show. She was getting more and more used to Adam the longer she was around him, and she truly did appreciate the sensitivity. But it still flustered her to hear him say something like that.
